When violence becomes acceptable. Explaining acts of violence as moral actions
Guided by Situational Action Theory, I shall address acts of violence as moral actions. I shall argue that all kinds of violence (e.g., partner violence, street violence and acts of terrorism) can be analysed and explained within the same theoretical framework. Specifically, I shall argue that the factors and processes that makes acts of violence acceptable in the circumstance are largely dependent on the interplay between people’s personal morality and the moral contexts in which they take part. I will suggest that a better understanding of how people acquire a personal morality that promote acts of violence in particular circumstances, and of how moral contexts that support acts of violence in particular circumstances emerge, is crucial for the development of effective policies to counteract acts of violence.
